NURSING SUPERVISOR JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY: Directs, through Unit Leaders, activities of nursing staff by performing the following duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plans and organizes activities in nursing services to ensure patient needs are met in accordance with instructions of Physicians and hospital administrative procedures.
2. Coordinates activities with other patient care units.
3. Consults with Unit Leader on nursing problems and interpretation of hospital policies to ensure patient needs are met.
4. Plans and organizes orientation and in-service training for unit staff members, and participates in guidance and educational programs.
5. Assists in formulating budget.
6. Establishes policies and procedures for nursing department, following directions of hospital administrators.
7. Identifies problem areas in nursing department such as understaffing, absenteeism, and wastefulness, and takes corrective action.
8. Monitors use of supplies and equipment to avoid abuses and requisitions supplies.
9. Responds to various departments requesting emergency assistance and assigns staff accordingly during emergencies.
10. Prepares work schedule and assigns duties to nursing staff in department for efficient use of personnel.
11. Directly supervises Ward Clerks, Nursing Assistants, Orderlies and Cardiopulmonary department.
12. Engages in studies and investigations related to improving nursing care.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience: Fifth year college or university program certificate; or

Two to four years related experience and/or training; orEquivalent combination of education and experienceLanguage Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports,Ability to respond to common inquires or complaints for customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community, Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format,Ability to effectively present information to top management and public groups

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with budgetary and financial worksheet

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Certificates, Licenses, Registration: Current Pennsylvania Licensure
