LECOM Institute for Successful Aging Implements New Geriatric Fracture Program

Fractures in older adults require timely action and special attention. Because of this, the LECOM Institute for Successful Aging recently developed their Geriatric Fracture Program to help ensure the highest quality healthcare for a growing population of elderly patients. The Geriatric Fracture Program works by streamlining evaluation and admission to the hospital, decreasing the time between admission and surgery, ensuring surgery is received within 24 hours of admission, thereby promoting early mobility, and shortening the average hospital stay.

“This program will significantly improve the overall quality of life after a hip fracture,” according to James Lin, D.O., MS (Med Ed), Director of the LECOM Institute for Successful Aging which was founded in 2008. “This program is one way we meet the needs of a growing geriatric population.” According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women and one in five men over the age of 50 will experience an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime. In addition, hip fracture patients over the age of 65 have an average mortality rate of up to a 40% in the year following a hip fracture. These are a few of the many reasons the Institute has adopted the Geriatric Fracture Program. During the hospital stay, the patient’s care will be coordinated by the geriatric medicine specialist in concert with a skilled orthopedic surgeon. A coordinated interdisciplinary team follows evidence- based, patient-centered protocols to meet the special needs of the elderly patient with a hip fracture.

Access to this unique Geriatric Fracture Program is through Millcreek Community Hospital’s 24-hour Emergency Department.

The LECOM Institute for Successful Aging also includes the Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit which is an acute care unit specially designed to provide medical and surgical care for the ill elderly. The transitional care unit (TCU) is the region’s only hospital based subacute rehabilitation unit where patients can more fully recover following acute care before returning home. In addition, the Millcreek Geriatric Education and Care Center, also known as Millcreek Manor, is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility connected to the hospital for maximum patient convenience and access to full hospital services. Moreover, Millcreek Community Hospital boasts the largest orthopedic residency program, only internal medicine residency program, and only geriatric medicine fellowship program in Northwestern Pennsylvania. As a teaching hospital, it is affiliated with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) which is the nation’s largest medical school in terms of enrolled students at its Erie, Pennsylvania headquarters, as well as its Bradenton, Florida, and Seton Hill, Pennsylvania facilities.
